Nothing gets rookies more excited about the upcoming FRC season than GRITS. The Georgia Robotics Invitational Tournament and Showcase is an off-season FRC event in which teams compete in the game from the past season one last time before the new game is announced in January. This year our rookies gained valuable experience as a drive team and pit crew, and will be more prepared than ever for kickoff. Of course, you never are fully prepared for FRC, let’s be real.
We endured the qualification matches with only a few mechanical malfunctions. The chain controlling #Hashtag’s wedge broke in the first match, permanently retiring the feature, RIP wedge. The rookies driving skills improved with every match, earning us a spot on the number 2 seed alliance with 1746 OTTO and 2415 Westminster WiredCats.
A quick flashback… At the 2016 Kennesaw qualifier event, we chose 2415 to join our number 1 seed alliance. Sadly, the alliance lost in the final match of the playoffs. AND, at the Peachtree District State Championship, we chose 1746 to be in our number 1 seed alliance and lost in the playoffs again.

The number 2 seed alliance of 2415, 1746, and us, 4468, three of the best teams in Georgia, came together to form the powerhouse alliance needed to beat 1261 and the top seed alliance. In the last semifinal match, the back bumper of #Hashtag fully detached. Yeah, bad. A field timeout and an alliance timeout bought us a few minutes to repair it with, you guessed it, zip-ties and duct-tape. The repair took long enough that we were forced to sit out one finals match. No problem, 2415 and 1746 won without breaking a sweat. We came back in for the final matches and finished off our opponent, defending our title as GRITS Champions!

Competing in the final FRC World Championship in St. Louis was an incredible experience. This was our second consecutive year attending worlds, as well as our second nomination for the Engineering Inspiration Award. Our robot made it to the playoffs at the Tesla subdivision. We were picked by the 8th seed alliance and lost in the first quarterfinal. We had a fantastic time and hope to go to Houston next year!
This past weekend, April 14th to the 16th, Fernbank LINKS attended the Peachtree State FIRST Robotics competition. LINKS’s robot was very successful, placing first in the qualifier rounds and being the leader of the first alliance, which included Otto (1746) and Drewbotics (5812), and they made it to the semifinals. Fortunately, LINKS was one of the two teams to receive the Engineering Inspirations award, earning them a paid ticket to the World competition in St. Louis, where they will be competing for the World Engineering Inspiration award.
LINKS had an amazing run at the Kennesaw District Qualifier, being undefeated and placing first in the qualifying matches. Their first loss in the semifinals was due to damage to two of their Alliance robots. They lost by only one point in the tie breaker! It was such an exciting day. Their performance has LINKS ranked 5th in the Peachtree District.
“#Hashtag,” dubbed “the flying robot,” added a boulder intake/shooter to their amazing defense barrier-defying robot! Their Alliance Partners had robots that could accurately and repeatedly shoot high goals and defend. The game is quite exciting. The team is working on adding a climber for the final seconds of each match.
The NASA Engineering Inspiration Award is a coveted one that LINKS won at the Peachtree Regional last year, and again at the Kennesaw District Qualifier this weekend. They qualify to compete at the State Championship, where two EI awardees will represent the Peachtree District at the FRC World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri later this month!
